'Labi Siffre' History:
About Lavi SiffreLabi Siffre (born June 25, 1945) is a Black British poet, composer and singer who has also written for the stage. Born in London to a Barbadian / Belgian mother and a Nigerian father, Siffre was schooled in Ealing and brought up in Bayswater and Hampstead. In the early 1970s he had solo hits with "It Must Be Love" (1971) (later a hit for Madness), "Crying, Laughing, Loving, Lying" (1972) and “Watch Me” (1972). His single “Thank Your Lucky Star” (1971) focussed on famine in the third world and his (1973) album “For the Children” expanded that theme to reference the dishonesty of religion and the rise of the tabloid state. He is known for his soulful voice and thought-provoking lyrics. His first poetry book “Nigger” (1993) was based on his view that you don’t have to be black to be one (though it helps). This was followed by “Blood on the Page” (1995) and “Monument” (1997). His poetry addresses wide ranging themes of theology, childhood, supposed adulthood, sociology, love, hate, language, critical thinking and the lack of it, communication, various “isms” and the methods by which the mainstream dismisses the marginalised and dispossessed. His fourth hit song, "Something Inside So Strong" (which won the 1986 Ivor Novello award for best song musically and lyrically) was sung as an anti-apartheid anthem in apartheid South Africa and is used worldwide by gay groups, women’s groups, disability groups, sexual abuse recovery groups and many others and organisations (Amnesty International for example) as an anthem of self-empowerment. Siffre and his legally recognised partner are gay & @ 2006 in a forty two year long, very much in love, relationship. LS is ironically responsible for Eminem’s first hit single “My Name Is” which sampled the rhythm track of "I Got The ..." from Siffre’s (1975) album “Remember My Song”, including Siffre on electric piano. Siffre wrote the song including that bass riff. Labi Siffre retired from music performance after "The Last Songs Tour" in '98 / '99. source: http://www.so-strong.com/archives/biog.htm |
