D-51 formed in June 2003 and consists of the vocal duo, Yu and Yasu. Their band name originated from the D-51 locomotive that runs through Japan. After D-51’s formation, the duo began to perform in Okinawa. They released a demo cd titled "Let’s Try" and quickly sold all 5000 copies.
In February 2004, they then released their first mini album, titled "Street Breeze". The mini album was an immediately success, ranking #1 on Okinawa’s Tower Records chart. That April, the mini album was then released on a nationwide scale. The band recieved a contract with Pony/Canyon records and made their major debut July 7th with the single "Top of the Summer".,br>
D-51’s releases began to rank high on the Oricon music charts. Their song, "Always", was also featured in the movie "Evening Sun"! "Dress" and "Brand New World" have also been used as opening themes for animes.
